Whats The Best Diesel Exhaust?

Diesel Exhaust System???

  • On a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9L Diesel (automatic, dually). I am going to put BD Exhaust Manifold on, that way the turbo will still fit properly and it'll be less restrictive. My question though is about the rest of the exhaust. What would be best to go with, a 5 inch exhaust (i'd probably make it dual just to look better, it wouldnt really be a "true duel" consdiering its an inline 6 engine) with a straight flow thorugh muffler. Or 6" diesel stacks which dont have a muffler. I'm look for strictly performance. Keep in mind I'm going to fully tune this truck, almost everything will be altered in some way, shape, or form. So, for those you who skipped all of this. The main question is: What is better for a highly tuned deisel, 5" straight flow duel exhaust or 6" no muffler stacks?

  • Answer:

if ya want most bang for your buck, and highest power potential,go with the stacks. virtually all sled pull trucks and semis have them for a reason. more info at www.dieselpowermag.com

ei9ther will do the trick if tou want to wear ear plugs all the time. what do you expect to accomplish. there are a lot of things you can do before you get to that point. i drive dodges for a dealership long and short distances. ihave driven some w/t 4,5, and 6 inch. loaded and mostly with a havey trailer loaded w/t meg, on the trailer. from 1992s , to 2007, sticks, auto, 5 spds. and 6 spds. if you drive long distances too much noise. if you drive short distance might be cool for a while. have fun.

Dude why don't you just leave it alone. You won't though, will you? If you just have to play with it, I think the single stack would look pretty good. I personally wouldn't mess with dual exhaust on an inline engine if you are putting performance over show.

Ok I have the answer for you. I have stacks on my 97 diesel dually. I wouldnt trade it for the world. It sounds awesome, like a semi, the power is amazing. And unless you go with stainless the stacks will last longer. I got mine thru Stylin Concepts, you can find them on the web. I think it was about $700 which was cheaper than redoing it all in stainless. Ive had the stacks for about 3 years, and havent had any problems. They were a pain to install, but its worth it.

its no difference which one you go with cuz the opening on the turbo is only 4 inches. Dodge is the only one that comes with a factory 4 inch turbo every other company is 3 1/2 in turbo. Why spend the extra money on the 6 in.The turbo is the largest they make.

Firstly, are you hauling lots with your 2006 CTD? If you are be very aware of the DRONE when you go with a Dual exhaust like MBRP if you go with a Turbo Back Exhaust. You can add a Aero 4040 or 4040XL resonator/muffler where the stock CAT Box is located to reduce this DRONE! I know many guys that have stuck with the 4" inch stock Turbo back exhaust on the 03 to present CTD's. They either remove the Cat Box and place a straight pipe from the turbo to an aftermarket free flowing muffler like Aero or MBRP and adding a chrome 5" tip. Some add the AERO 4040 or 4040XL resonator with a free flowing muffler to reduce the DRONE that will absolutely drive you NUTS when you are under load. Talking with guys I would stick with a 4" unless you are looking at getting at least +450HP out of the CTD then I would look at getting a 5" exhaust or larger! With my 04 HO CTD, I decided to save some coin and just add a 4" AERO 4040XL free flowing muffler where the stock muffer was located and added a 5" 304 Chrome tip. I got very little DRONE from pulling my 26ft 5th wheel. I got the Edge Juice with Attitude with a AFE stage 2 CAI and the sound the new muffer makes is great....better than stock! The cab noise is a few Deci's louder than stock.....and a lot louder when you get your foot into it! EGT's (Pyro - Pre Turbo) when I got the box on Level 3 the attitude monitor around town shows in the neighbourhood of 600 to 900 and when I am getting my foot into it it reaches around 1100 to 1300. I got the Box set for defueling at 1350 and max boast of 38PSI. With sticking with the stock exhaust and removing the stock muffler and adding the Aero and AFE CAI dropped EGT's by about 100 to 200 depending on the conditions and load.
