What year is compatible to 1999 neon?

Can a 1999 neon highline's automatic transmission be swapped with a 2001 neon's automatic tranny ?

  • I have a 1999 Dodge neon highline and it tranny is just about garbage... i have heard that the '01 neon's automatic transmission is better because of changed gear ratios... altho i havent confirmed that myself. is it was possible to swap a used 01 neon's tranny into my 99 neon. if so how easy/hard is it ?

  • Answer:

01 Neons have overdrive trannys which wont work so good with your older Neon. The wiring and the computer are different. Physcially you could probably bolt them right up but since the tranny (01-up) is computer controlled, it wont shift like it is supposed to. I think the cut off year for the normal three speed automatics is 2000. From what I have seen, the O/D transmissions are somewhat problematic. I have a 2000 neon SE with 125K miles on it havent had any problems with it. You will probably need a tranny from a 2000-earlier.

I'm leaning towards 'No', but if it can be done, it would require quite a bit of work. 3 speed automatic Neons: 1995-1999 4 speed automatic Neons: 2000-2005 Find more answers here: http://forums.neons.org/viewforum.php?f=48
