My 97 dodge neon has a rattling noise when accelorating?

  • I just got a 1997 dodge neon im having a few issues some i think are due to my egr valve but im also having a rattling noise from the engine area when accelorating or slight reving and it sometimes is with white/grey smoke from my tailpipe... it also hisitates at times when i try to accelorate and that noise gets loud but i mostly only hear it from inside the car...;please help "serious answers only plz"

the smoke is bad if it stays... next time you drive, when you arrive at your destination (when the engine has warmed up) give it a rev and check for the smoke again... as the other guy said, if the smoke is still there then the water has to be coming from somewhere - that somewhere will be your circulation system, water leaking into the combustion area. Could be a cracked head, block, manifold... the longer you leave it, the worse it will get. and btw all oil is going to be black after a while. if it looks like it has other stuff mixed in with it, then it's bad news. I'm not trying to sound like a dick, but at the end of the day it's a neon... not built to last, not built well and I wouldn't repair it if it was my car, I'd get rid and get a replacement.

Egr wouldn't rattle but could cause hesitation. Rattling could be 1000 things but based on your symptoms I would say its probably an expensive internal engine failure. White smoke could just be condensation if the problem only occurs in the morning, but would go away once car is warmed up. If it doesnt, its probably a blown head gasket and you're burning coolant. Smoke with a blue-ish tint would indicate you're burning oil from either: blown head gasket, bad rings, or valve guides/seals. A good thing to do would be check your coolant level, if low you've probably got a blown head gasket. Also check oil, if BLACK (not coffee brown), you're burning oil, also if you find miky stuff your head gasket is blown.
