How to fix Windows 7 ultimate sound?

How to fix the sound on my Windows 7?

• I have a windows 7 and my F11 button is also my mute button the light is on red which indicates it is muted but when I press it the light does not change. Then I look at my task bar and there is a red and white x on it when i put the mouse on it a window pops up that reads no headphones or speakers are plugged in when my computer has its own internal speakers. I went to sounds and there is ATI HDMI output which is what it gave me after I updated it but then i roll it back and it says high def audio device which is what it originally had before this happened. i tried uninstalling it and then waiting and installing it again but that didn't work. I have never connected any speakers i have only used my internal speakers and headphones. I also tried to troubleshoot but nothing happened. Please help I would greatly appreciate it.

  this sounds like the audio driver might be causing the problem. try plugging in some headphones and see what happens
