Capture Card and Harddrive question (good PC knowledge please)?
-
1. I'm looking for a capture card but can't decide which one to get. Any suggestions? I was thinking about the Blackmagic Intensity Pro but I see a bunch of video's on youtube talking about "RAID" setups and honestly I have no idea what that is or if I will need it. Should I get the Blackmagic intensity shuttle instead? I think my computer can handle the Pro but what are it's benefits, and can my computer handle it? Is there a better one? Price is NO issue. Just no more than $325 or so... *^^ Yes the Capture Card is for Console use not PC, though can it do PC also?* The video I watched some kid had 5 HD's! set up Raid 3 or something with like 1,500GB of memory or something? Is the pro really that complicated? 2. I need help deciding what type of harddrive I should get? Originally I was going to go with a 128GB PLextor SSD and that's it but I have a feeling I might fill that up fast and I would like to just get all the internals once and be done with it for the time being. However I was on a budget but I gave up Ergonomics (cool keyboard and mouse) for another HD instead. Basically I'm asking what is my best option? I DO definitely want a SSD for Win7 OS to startup really fast and some programs ill be using such as Adobe After Effects, Premiere, Unreal Dev Kit, Creation Kit, and Skyrim. Could I fit my most used programs on a SSD and the others on just a HD? Should I go for a lower GB SSD and use the saved $$ for a good keyboard and mouse or just keep the 128GB PLextor which I know will run well? Also do I need to set up RAID or whatever that is instead? I want to be able to use my capture card to capture the most ridiculous quality possible without any lag whatsoever. Basically make it look like what I see on my TV or better. Sorry if this was confusing, and I have a feeling since I type so much nobody will answer, that usually happens :/ sorry! Here's my comp specs for what I'm getting so far. Just need help with HD/SSD: Case: Thermaltake Chaser GPU: AMD 7970 CPU: i7-3820 MoB: Sabertooth X79 RAM: Ripjaws Quad Channel 16GB PSU: 700w Corsair OS: win 7 * HD/SSD: 128 Plextor SSD, and Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.D 1TB 7,200RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM * Thank you so much, have a awesome day!

Answer:
an ssd will fill up fast especially with video capture. the reason people use SSD's and RAID for video capture is because of the need for fast write speeds. if the hard drive cannot save the file fast enough, your video's quality may not be the best. therefore, RAID0 is used to speed up hard drives as they work together. look up what the different types of RAID are. i suggest the following: 1. you can use an ssd and install windows and put commonly used programs and small apps on that. put the rest of the large files on a separate internal 1tb drive. you can record to your SSD and then transfer the file later to your 1tb hard drive 2. get 2 1tb hard drives and set them up in RAID0 (look up how to set that up) this will increase speed but it will also increase risk of losing all data. so RAID10 or RAID5 if you have the money for it. as for recording pc games, buy FRAPS (the program)
