Is this camera good Canon HV20?

For a novist wedding videographer: Canon GL2 or Canon HV20?

  • I am a recent graduate beginning my own videography business. I'm filming my first wedding this summer and want to buy an affordable camera; nothing under $1000. From the research i've done, i've heard the Canon GL2 is a great professional starting camera, but have also been reading from numerous articles that filming with a canon hv20 would be better quality because it is HD, plus cheaper. Would filming with a canon hv20 look unprofessional at a wedding considering it's a consumer camera? What camera would you guys recommend? Thanks!

  • Answer:

The GL-2 is still on their website, but I didn't see the HV20 (only the HV40) Both the HVs and the GL are miniDv based (good). I own and use the GL-2, love it. I know you are worried about how it makes you look showing up with what most people will assume is a routine camcorder...very valid and real concern. What media do you intend to deliver? Are you burning to Blu-ray, or a standard DVD. If the final product is going to DVD, that would tend toward the GL-2 The GL and other 3 sensor cameras have a weakness for low lighting. If you are authoring Blu-ray AND dealing with low light, the HV may be better. The lighting benefit is marginal, both cameras recomend 100 lux but the Hv can go to under 3. GL-2 6 lx rec 100 HV 3 lx rec 100 Between the two, I'd make the decision based on intended final media.

Yes with Canon GL2 camera, or any professional cameras. I used Sony Z1U which is also good for wedding and music video. Because 3CCD gives a good video images, and reliable to. You do not want to have problems while shooting the wedding. Make sure you have extra tapes ready and battery life enough to do the whole wedding. I put another camera on tripod for back up in case sometime I mess up a little. That's because I do everything by myself. But you can have someone hold the lights and the boom microphone for you. I like what I do, so do you..good luck, I buy my camera from J&R.com

GL2, Best for what your going to do. Nothing that does not use MiniDV tape. Your clients are going to want the best video quality going. And being a top answerer here, I have seen more questions than I care to count, about other storage media and the problems they have. You do not need a lost content event happening after you tape some couples wedding. That does not happen with MiniDV tape. I am a former wedding videographer, got out do to health reasons
