Best-Reasonably Priced-HD Camcorder?

What Camcorder should I get?

• I want to make independent films. My budget for a camera has gone up buying a used one of course. I am looking into several camcorders my friend recommended the Canon GL 2 Camcorder he said it was the best one out there for my price range. Then other people online say the GL 2 is a piece of crap and to get a Panasonic camera...etc So for $1000 how close to professional can I get? I will be buying my camcorder on Ebay. I know it won't be a professional camcorder but i am looking to find something that is better than my piece of crap consumer camcorder. I also like manual focus as my old camera had one. My question is what's the best camcorder that I can get used for $1000? I've had many people saying to get the Canon GL 2 Camcorder that its the best one for my money they told me good video quality, good sound quality, good features...etc. Also it doesn't have to be a MiniDV I've just had bad luck with hard drives as my consumer camcorder has a hard drive and it gives me bad picture quality. I also have a fire wire card.

  Getting a professional or semi pro camcorder, go with MiniDV tape camcorder, best video quality is had form those.
