What is correct orientation for front engine/transaxle mount? 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager?
-
Here is a question that will test your expertise. 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager. The engine/transaxle mount in the front (left side of the engine) has a round insert. The insert is designed such that it will hold the engine weight/force in one direction only, and it was installed so that it supported upwards force, rather than the downward weight of the engine. The old mount was such that it would hold weight in an upwards direction, as if the insert was upside down. This actually makes sense - when you step on the gas, the torque of the engine will cause the engine to twist such that it puts a lot of upwards force on this mount, and I'm thinking that is the way the mount should be. So it doesn't actually hold the weight of the engine - the left and right mounts do that. The front and back mount are to hold the engine still when you step on the gas. If this doesn't make sense, then either I didn't explain it well, or you don't know enough about the mounts on these engines to be able to answer my question. I hope it is the latter :D. So having said that - is the front mount supposed to support weight in an upwards direction, since that is where the torque goes when you stop on the gas?

Answer:
The front "mount" counteracts "torque twist" which in the case of a transverse mounted engine is in an upward direction at the front of the vehicle, the left and right side mounts support the weight.

It's called a roll restrictor or dog bone mount. And yes, all it does is prevent the engine from twisting when torque is produced.
