How to make copy-pasted game appear installed in my PC?
-
I got this game Command and Conquer Generals from a bro but it's a folder of the full game from his directory and we copy-pasted it to my directory and the game runs perfectly in my pc without being installed. We got this expansion pack of the game C&C Zero hour (original game disks), but unable to continue the installation because it requires the original game installed since we just copy pasted the game folder - We don't have the installer of the original game, only the expansion. We got three plans to work this out but we're just familiar and not experts so we don't know how to do these. One is to make the copy pasted C&C generals appear installed in the pc by modifying stuff like the registry. Two is extract the files manually from the expansion pack. Three, redirect the expansion's installer to the copy pasted game so it knows where to install the expansion pack. A step by step guide will be very helpful. Please educate us.

As you know, programs can't just be copy/pasted from one setup to another. They won't work as the files aren't in the registry. As for your 3 options, the "easiest" way is the first one. However, you will need to know if there are other files installed by the game in other folders like the Windows folder, Applications Data, User's folder, Program Startup folder, etc. Some may be buried deep under other Program Files > Common Files folder. You also need to know the settings stored on the registry. If you can search for each one of them then you can do an Export/Import. Good luck! Oh, I found a source of the game of C&C Generals and Zero Hour last week. I think I still have the link somewhere in my history. Unfortunately, I can't list it here nor can't send it to you by email as your profile doesn't allow it. EDIT: Simply adding me as a contact won't help. Your email is not enabled on Y!A so there's no way for you to contact me and vice-versa. Fix it.

The easiest way is definitely by redirecting the installer to the folder, honestly unless this for some reason fails I really don't see what the problem is with doing this. Option 1 on your list is the only way to make it show up as installed to the system but seriously there is not really a way of doing this except by looking at the registry of a computer with the game installed, finding all the keys that were added and where they were added, then creating those on yours. That method is a ridiculous amount of time and effort for something that is not needed. As for method 2 I have never really done that before, I mean it should work since installing it just rewrites the files, but I would make a copy of the original copied folder so when you copy/replace the files with extracted ones if it doesn't work you can have a working copy still. All in all method 3 is by far the easiest way and should work.
