3.4 SFI engine in '93 Camaro - surging, high idle, serious problem?
-
I helped my buddy today to swap the valve cover gaskets on his 1993 Camaro with a 3.4SFI engine and a 5 speed transmission. That's all we were doing, changing the valve cover gaskets because it was blowing oil. Upon getting the drivers side valve cover off there was a large spot in it from where at one point or another the rocker arm had struck it (just additional information) The real problem is, Upon reassembly of the engine, when the car starts it is; backfiring (from time to time) surging (idle from 900 to 1200 rpms and SOMETIMES upon the first few seconds of starting as high as 3400) AND I can hear on the drivers side where something is either trying very very hard to pull air or is trying to purge air....either way... the oil fill hole on top of the drivers side valve cover had smoke coming out of it AND the hole on the side of the intake just about 3 inches outside of the air box also had SMOKE coming out of it. I am beyond my point of knowledge. We had to pull the entire top part off the engine to get the valve covers off, you know, the aluminum piece that says 3.4 SFI and has the fuel injectors on the underside of it. What I want to know, is, in this process has anyone else dealt with this or can you tell me how to fix it? We didn't change ANYTHING except the valve cover gaskets and it was running completely fine before we did it. I made sure the fuel injectors were seated properly before bolting everything back down too. If you have ANY thing you can tell me that could assist my friend and I with this problem that is beyond our knowledge then we would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you so much. I will choose a best answer to this tomorrow afternoon... if you would like any more details or think you may be able to help us, I will put my email on here and if someone knows what they are talking about and is a nice enough mechanic to give me some of their time I will give them my number through email and get some one on one advice. Thanks everyone, seriously. [email protected]

Answer:
Did you leave the vacuum hose off of the brake booster that goes to the upper intake vacuum port? It will idle high and hiss loudly on the driver's side.
