Question about Windows Live IDs?

Hey, I just noticed that you can turn whatever mail address you have into a Live ID. I have several, and I think I'll set up a Live ID with every one of them. I'm pretty new to the whole system, therefore these questions: How manyLive IDs can I have at the sametime? What exactly are the benefits of Live IDs? I know it helps with linking your computer to your Xbox Live account, but what else?
