How to remove ignition switch?

How do i remove the ignition switch in a 1966 impala WITHOUT the key?

  • I inherited a 1966 impala 4 door with a 283. The ignition is in the dash. i do not have a key. but i am taking the ignition to a locksmith to get a key remade for it. How do i remove the ignition WITHOUT i repeat WITHOUT the key. I know if you have the key you can just turn it to ACC and use a paperclip. I have found many videos and tutorials on how to do this. yet none of them tell me how to do it WITHOUT the god damn key. Thanks for all your help. JT

Unscrew the ignition switch with the lock and tumbler from under the dash. The locksmith can then easily pick the lock. What I did once was just buy a whole new ignition switch and lock and tumbler. They sell the whole ignition, door, and trunk key(using the same key) for like $50 + $25 for the switch.

Elliot M is correct. See the tiny hole in the face of the ignition switch? Okay...remove the ring around the switch and insert a paper clip into that hole. Might have to feel around a bit but this will remove the lock tumblers and the ignition switch just slides out through the hole in the dash.
