What heads for this cam?
-
It's the ZZ9 cam, Duration 212/226, .483"/.520" Lift, and 112 deg seperation. I would like to reach the upper limites of what this cam is capable horsepower wise. It's a pretty stout cam, with the rigth heads, intake manifold, and carb i believe i could reach 450hp. It's very similar to the LT4 cam I'm looking at a set of heads that flows 240cfm, sound about right for this cam?

That's the TPIS cam. We've made a TON of their cams. I would shim the plunger travel up in the lifters so that they have .015 or about. That's the only way you will get a hydraulic lifter to 'behave' when trying to turn alot of RPM. Next, I would buy a Manton pushrod for it. Try their 11/32 pushrod. Just mock everything up and get the right length first. You will also need to put at least 130 lbs of closed pressure worth of valve spring in, and 400 open. (At least if you are trying to turn this thing 7,000 RPM.) You better put a really stout valve lock and retainer combo on it. If you are messing with a 350, I would stick with a Vortec head or something like it. I would use a 1.6 ratio rocker arm on the intake side only. You can do a 1.6 on the exhaust. However, doing that will cost you a couple of points in idle vacuum and noticeable bottom end. In essence, the added top end from the bigger ratio on the exhaust will come at a cost of low rpm torque. Also, if this is indeed a 350, I would not put a bigger runner head on it if you care at all about torque at street-able cruise RPM levels because you'll knock a TON of torque out of it. The cam will already do that for you, so don't double whammy yourself. With the wide 112 LSA, you can certainly tolerate a little more compression, and certainly zero decking the block to get the piston to head squish clearance nice and tight. That cam is an alright cam, but I've got stuff that will do a better job for you across the entire RPM range. Email: [email protected]

there are many part to this you have to work out first. how long do you want this motor to last? aluminium heads are good and light weight, but it really come down to the size of the chambers but the larger the chamber the larger the valve head which has momentum which needs stronger springs and is really hard on a cam. I think you would be best with a aluminum head with standard sizes valves and have the ports polished, you have the lifts to open the valve more then enough.

i personally would look for an after market heads and make them aluminium heads and not the steal heads if you want the max HP then you want aluminium heads cause there light weight and make sure you get the high performance heads.
You never told us what size engine, or compression ratio we're dealing with........in a 350........that cam will be done by 5,000-5,400 RPM.........and you'll need 10:1 or better compression to crutch those wide lobe centers and have any kind of torque under 1,800 RPM or so.

Should be no problem making the HP but the cam is really not very big. To get those flow numbers would probably require an aftermarket head.
