1994 Chevy Cavalier upgrade?

  • I have a 1994 Chevy Cavalier. I want to upgrade it to give it more power at a lower price. Im a car guy so i can do pretty much anything. any ideas on what? this is because im sick of the V6 cars always passing me and all i want is to blow pass them and let them know that this isnt stock. thanks

  • Answer:

Start with a free flowing exhaust and intake tube with a k&n filter. If that isn't enough, try to find a performance chip for it. If you are really ambitious, drop in a second generation quad 4 out of a grand am.

Its all in the computers dog. get someone at a gm dealership to tell you about the upgrade to the computer chip almost twice the RPm's and a whole lot more power, but remember that's a front wheel climber it goes where you point it but this time it will be a lot quicker. Th rp are not recommended so your engine will last maybe five good run's then your out shopping for some other stuff, if you replace the engine go for a 4.3 out of an older Chevy lumina van they are like gold and never blow. just be careful bud the heat is out there looking for us hogs on a strip..

You're trying to polish a turd. You're not going to make that car fast for cheap. Maybe you could put a newer Ecotec in it. There's a lot of performance stuff for that engine. Any money you spend on this would be better spent on another car, though.

ok the calier isnt really worth supin up but if ur gona do it you might as well buy a new engine cause ounce you soup that onew up it will blow the head because i did this with a 1996 cavalier and thought it was just the engine so i replaced it and had a mechanic to have it souped up and blew that engine to so i bought another engine and then bought another car and souped it up so after all that i would of saved about 5000 if i would of just bought the new car hope this helped

Since your car is a four cylinder it will be harder to get it to go like a six cylinder with very cheep mods but if your willing to try then this is what I recommend. I did all of these mods to my 1992 Chevy Lumina coupe it has a 3.1L V6 (sorry) and what I did to my car made a pritty noticable difference in performance. The first thing that you could try is a tune up this will give your car some more power if it has not had a tune up in a wile. I would change the o2 sensor change the spark plugs and wires clean out the PCV valve change the air filter Fram air hogs are good because they let more air into the engine and they can be cleaned and unlike K&N air filters you don't have to oil them.I also moded the air box by drilling six half inch holes into the baffle inside the air box which did make a little differnece. The computer needs to relearn its peramiters before you start to actually feel anything this takes about 10 to 20 miles. However if you do dicide to mod your air box than you should not mess with the intake hose that runs behind your head light becasue this can have negative efects on performance. Next try to clean out the intake manifold and throttle body I did this on my car and it made a world of difference you would not beleave the crap that came out of the throttle body I had to use two cans to get everything out of the engine. I also put on a cheap high flow after market muffler that is a little louder than the old one but it did make a difference. I also put on a high flow catalytic converter wich helped out even more. And to help out with handling I put on 16 rims off of a 1993 pontiac grand Prix this made a BIG difference in handling I went from crappy 14x6 to 16x8's and I also put on front and rear struts that are for a Euro Lumina wich lowered the car about two inches it makes it look a lot better and now it handles like its on rails.

You could add a cold air intake, cat back exhaust and headers for a start it wont make to big a change but will help other than that some light weight wheels to reduce parasitic drag and some grippy tires dor a better contact patch for taking off and or cornering. If you want to go all out stip out the interiour and remove uneeded things like AC,back seats passenger seat, head liner, radio ect. Also you could have the engine built but I would recoment having a turbo set up as na Cav motors arent all that hot even built well for that you would have to talk to your local race shop or performance shop but plan on atleast 10K due to labor parts and at least 6 months down time for the car if not longer.

If you can do most of the work yourself, then id sugges the race chip along with just removing the cat if you can get away with it. If you live where you have to pass deq, then just punch uot the honeycombs inside and put a turbo muffler on. I did that with my own 94 chevy cav with a v6. Straight piped with a turbo muffler and it makes a world of differance. Air intakes are good too but a high flow air filter does great. You can also try to switch gas to running premium and that helps too. hope this helps

chelsea_sherry_williams

do any thing but the cold air you lose what sad amount of tourqe these cares have and dont listen to TBONE cams exhuast light weight flywheel pulleys smaller aluminum rims not 18s or 20s more like 14s a chip to upgrade your ecu a larger throttle body port polish and then maybe a forced induction rebuild all internals and then get an intercooler after 10 grand or more you can keep up with the big v8s or you can just buy a quicker car there is no cheap horsepower well besides those sweet honda stickers i see all over the civics i always see in my rearview
