How much would it cost to fix a blown head gasket on a 2001 BMW 325ci?
-
I'm wondering if anyone can give me a rough estimate on cost of this issue. I've head it's a big job, and I only have basic maintenance experience. It happened last week and the car's currently nonoperational so I'm taking it in, but don't want to get robbed by a dealer or shop. what would the dealer cost be? what would independent shops charge? Thanks.

Sorry to be a bearer of bad news, but on the m54 engine because of the aluminum head, when you over heat that motor and the head gasket blows it not because the gasket is weak, it because the head has been warped. So your looking at a new head, gasket set, and because of the heat it has made the plastic cooling system parts weak. its a good idea to replace entire cooling system while making the repair. The bad thing about this is if you just put a head gasket on the car, it will still over heat due to the head warping. ok another issue is when a head warps the head puts extreme pressure on the head bolts, these will break when taking the head off. if this happens you will have to buy a new or used engine. The broken bolts could be removed but causes the holes in the block to loose tolerance and therefor the new bolts will back out causing another blown gasket. ive replaced atleast 25 m54 motors in various vehicles for this same problem. Everything i say is true, dont throw your money away buy just replacing the gasket. its gonna be about 4k ot 5k for a used motor with new cooling system, and 6k to 7k for a new factory motor and cooling system. hope this helps. The job is a little extensive. The fuel injectors sometimes fall apart when removing the intake manifold. Those cost about from 30 to 200 each depending on where you got them. The head gasket cost about 100. The set about 300, though its not necessary. and a thermostat about 30 bucks. You over heated the car didn't you? Bad thermostat or a leak was the cause of your problem. I never take my car to a shop, to broke lol. These are the parts you may need. I attached a link where I get my parts. Your looking at about a 1000 to 1500 at any small shop and the dealer will be much more because they usually replace all associated parts, not just the broken ones. Good luck
