How many watts is the stock e46 stereo?

  • i have a 2000 bmw 323i and i wanna know how many is the stock bmw e46 stereo because i was thinking of upgrading to a new one those audiovox uv8 in dash dvd players and they have 160 watts and by getting that i dont wanna degrade my system

    The stock stereo is made by Alpine, the upgraded stereo is the same head unit, but with an HK amp, upgraded speakers and two small subs with their own HK amp. The head unit is only a pre amp, the amp in the trunk is where the power comes from. I found a thread that said it is rated at 20-40 watts per channel *10 channels, including built in cross overs without the HK system. Your new amp will need to power 10 speakers (maybe 8, don't remember exactly except for E46 M3 uses 10 stock 12 for HK). BMW does not use Bose. In 2000, they used Alpine, Becker, Lear, HK.

Not sure where the answerers get their "Bose" info from. Obviously none of them has ever owned a BMW. BMW has never had Bose system in their E46 models, or any other models. They only use Harman Kardon (which is a TOTALLY different company from Bose) for their premium sound system. Newer models use Logic 7, which is also a Harman Kardon company. Now, to answer your question, the stock BMW system is quite bad by comparison to any aftermarket systems, so go ahead and get your new system. It will definitely be an improvement.

okay...bmw means it comes with bose...which means if you switch the head unit...your speakers are gonna suck...just keep it the stock sound system in bimmers are crazy

um ya bose is great but most of the systems they put in cars have at least one external amplifier that runs off the stock deck in cars like that your better off replacing all the speakers speaker wires and adding subs however they do make amplifier bypass harnesses but ive always rewired everything but im picky
