Does a bmw 318i se 2.0l 2002 have a distributor cap?

Bmw e46 318i se maf problem?

  • i have just bought a 1999 bmw 318i se for a cheap price, full bmw service history mot till november and tax till june so im happy that it has been looked after, i bought it from an auction and drove it back and noticed it lacked power at low revs and struggled to get over 80 mph. i done some research over the last couple of days on the net and narrowed it down to the mass airflow sensor(maf). i tried cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner and it did not really make much difference, then i disconnected the maf whilst the engine was running took it for a spin round the block and was i in for a shock when i put my foot down, wasnt expecting the power to be back everything ok, plugged the maf back in and back to being sluggish and struggling to get over 3000 rpm. what im trtying to get at is would the car be ok to drive with the maf off as i have not got the money until next week and obviously need to get to and from work?? anyone who has experienced these problems please let me know what you done and where i can buy a cheap part from. im in hastings east sussex. thanks dean

  • Answer:

You can pick up a used MAF from salvage yards with a lot of life left in it for cheap. That's what I did on mine. You can run the car with MAF unplugged but you really shouldn't. The incomplete/inefficient combustion that your engine makes creates a lot of black smoke which will ultimately shorten the life of your catalytic converter.

It would be kind of ok to drive the car with the maf unplugged for sometime since the DME/ecu would use default settings (but you have to live with the check engine light). But you failed to mention other pertinent details of the problem. Was there a check engine light before you unplugged the maf and while the engine was "struggling" to get over 3k rpm ? Was the engine's idle rough and surging, etc.? I would suggest replacing the maf (obviously), clearing the faults, roadtesting and then checking for other faults thereafter.
