How to get my swift code?

My 2002 BMW 330i is showing the code P0741. How can i get rid of this code what am I supposed to do to fix it?

  • Every day I drive home from a local golf course on the freeway for about 5 minutes. On the highway there is a slight hill thats maybe a 5 foot gradual climb. No big deal well one night when driving home going over this small little hill the "Service Engine Soon" light came on so I go home plug in the obdII code reader and it showed P0741 I looked it up and its Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck Off. My car has a ZF automatic with 123,000 miles and it shifts better then any car that I have driven in my life nothing seems different about it so I decide to erase the code and see if it was a fluke. About 2-3 weeks later driving home from the golf course on the same road and right as I go over that little hill boom!!! Service engine soon light flashes on. So now im thinking to myself thats weird same spot twice maybe thats a fluke so I erase the code again because nothing seems wrong. Again driving home about 2-3 weeks later same spot the Service engine soon light comes on again for the third time all within about twenty feet of eachother on the freeway. So now I have had enough so I call my mechanic and he says if the torque converter was not working properly the car would die when I came to a stop once i got off the freeway. He recommended I do some more research I found out that the possible causes could be: low transmission fluid, dirty transmission fluid, Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve, Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors, Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted, and Transmission internal mechanical problem. I called my mechanic back and he says that we should change the tranny fluid and filter. I need your opinions will just changing the fluid do the trick or is that just a waste of time and money? I just want it to go away forever because the car shifts perfectly but that light is so annoying and scares the crap out of me. It just doesnt make sense to me that it happened 3 times all in the same spot. Please I need answers on how to fix it or get it fixed im in much need of help. Whewww that was a lot sorry I just needed to say it all. Thanks in advance for reading and respoding.

This is actually common- I have replaced nearly a dozen converters for this issue- the following is a copy of the BMW bulletin. Drop the trans- pull out the converter- pour out enough oil you can look inside- you will see the seal is missing pieces. This causes the converter clutch to slip and results in the fault. 85% of the time a new converter fixes the problem. You can order a converter from a dealer at www.getbmwparts.com. I always replace the converter seal on the trans at the same time on principle. ZF 5HP19 Transmission - Diagnosis of EGS FC 048 (30 hex) MODEL E46: 323i, 325i, 330i with M52TU, M54, M56 and ZF 5HP19 E39: 525i, 530i with M54 and ZF 5HP19 E85: Z4 roadster 2.5, 3.0 with M54 and ZF 5HP19 SITUATION "Service Engine Soon" is illuminated and fault code 048 "Converter lock-up excessive slip" (30 hex or P0741) is stored in the EGS transmission control module. CAUSE Possible cause: deterioration of the torque converter turbine shaft seal PROCEDURE Remove the torque converter. For the removal procedure, refer to Repair Manual RA24 40 002. 2. Drain the fluid out of the torque converter, and carefully inspect the turbine shaft seal (1) INSIDE THE BOTTOM OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER for signs of damage (cracks, splits, etc.).Helpful Hints: 3. Use a small flashlight to illuminate inside the bottom of the torque converter to examine the turbine shaft seal. The turbine seal is brownish orange in color and measures approximately 1" in diameter. If evidence of seal deterioration is found, replace the torque converter. Additionally, if the transmission fluid shows signs of deterioration ("dirty fluid"), the fluid should be replaced in conjunction with the fluid strainer. For the strainer replacement procedure, refer to Repair Manual RA24 31 151. Refill and/or top off the fluid level according to Repair Manual RA 00 11 500, using ESSO ATF LT 71141 (P/N 83 22 9 407 807).

Frankly, I have yet to see a BMW car setting a torque converter fault and not needing a transmission. But of course you can try changing the transmission oil (with or without the filter). But be forewarned that should the transmission oil be very dark (as in blackish) and smell burnt (like a s----y kind of smell), then no oil change can change the inevitable. I usually recommend a tranny oil change at about 90 to 100 k miles for this is what BMW considers the "lifetime" of the transmission. But you are well past this figure.
