How do you become a switch technician?

I want to become a BMW "M" Technician?

  • Im going to graduate highschool and I want to become a BMW "M" technician. I own a M car and find them so intresting, so why not build them. What do I need to do to become a technician?

  • Answer:

Brandon, As an add on from what the others said above... Just remember that BMW hires the best of the best, and you have to pay attention to your post auto mechanic schooling in order to secure a place with BMW's STEP program. Keep your GPA way up! They mandate a 3.2, but prefer a 3.5. The school's accreditation is of the utmost importance as well. Look into UTI if you can swing approx. $36,000.00 for the degree. UTI (Universal Technical Institute) offers make specific schooling and they're worth it. The upside (yet downside as well) is the rate at which you graduate. They move you out fast, so you'll have your dream job sooner, BUT following suit your workload will be doubled. Good luck if this is what your planning as far as a career goes...BMWs are amazing cars. I admire the men and women who work on them! :)

Hey Brandon, In order to become a BMW technician - or any automotive technician - for that matter, it is necessary that you attend an automotive school after you graduate highschool. Once in automotive school, you can specialize to become a technician for european or exotic car companies. Once you have your automotive degree, you then have to apply. Concerning BMW M "technicians", i would assume that you just apply to work for BMW and then attend one of their development courses - specialized for M-Series. I would recommend automotive school only if you are very passionate about cars and how they work.

You need to become a general auto technician. Enroll in a program that is linked to BMW. You can't focus on M models only. There is truly not much differece between IS and M that a technicion would need to specialize study for.

Here is exactly what you need to know - straight from the BMW STEP web site. To qualify for BMW's Service Technician Education Program (STEP), one needs to meet stringent acceptance criteria. An applicant accepted to BMW STEP can consider him or herself in rare company. The STEP management staff selects applicants from the best post-secondary automotive technical schools across the United States...but only a small percentage of their graduates! In other words, only the best of the best are chosen for this prestigious training opportunity. Go to the link below for more info. You need to be PASSIONATE about working on BMWs to make it through this program. If you do, the $$$ is good.
