well there is two variants of this special automatic shift. first we have a manual automatic shift and a automatic manual shift. sounds confusing, not really. manual automatic shift are transmission system that has a torque converter like a normal automatic transmission does. what is special about this system is that you can manually shift what gear you want by using the plus or minus shift on the transmission knob or on buttons on the stearing wheel. models such as Volvo S80 and most Porshe automatic shift models use this system. another kind of system is the automatic manual. here we have a regular manual gearbox that has special electronic operated clutch. when you shift gear the electronics will automatically press the clutch for you. there will be no clutch pedal in a car. you can actually push start these type of cars compared those with an automatic shift. other than BMW, Alfa Romeo and Audi have their own system. Audi calls it DSG gearbox, direct sequantial gearbox. its available on its TT coupe and most of it other model lineup.

Almost all mid-range and luxury cars have a manu-matic option (an automatic transmission that you can shift) these days.

most cars have it now, even the Kia. But BMW is the only car you want to drive. Everything else is just transportation.

To be direct to its competitive is the Benz E class. But Benz have that on almost other models. I can name a few company that offer this type of tranny like Ferrari; Aston Martin; Lambo; Porche; Land Rover... they don't use the same name or term but they work the same way

Porsche's have what they call tiptronic mode, which is the same thing. Range Rover also offer the same kind of transmission choice as well as Mitsubishi's Galant. :)
