Do larger spiders spin thicker webs?

Spider experts. Do spiders always spin webs in the same direction?

  • eg: clockwise or counter-clockwise. Do all spiders (individuals, species, regions, etc.) spin in the same direction?

  • Answer:

There are a lot of different types of spiders. Spiders build webs with a purpose and pattern to catch prey. They aren't built in any direction particularly. Also, when prey is caught in the web, they move to it, kill it with poison, wrap it up further in the web for feeding. Then, they repair the web in any direction needed to rebuild it. I will say though that this is an excellent question. Spider webs are truly amazing and isn't it fantastic that nature would create such a tiny animal that is capable of such beautiful artwork. So the snwer is no, they build them in any direction necessary, depending on wind direction, area being used for the web, and size.

Interesting question! I don't know whether spiders have a "handedness"; I've never looked that closely at it, and I don't recall ever reading about it. Certainly strands can be laid down in either direction, but some of that involves different kinds of strands, and some of that is when spiders are adjusting the spiral to an odd shape with no room for a full spiral. I don't know if there is a 'standard direction' of spiralling, and if so whether it varies between spiders or between kinds of spiders. I shall have to look into this now - thank you!

A spider spins a web clockwise then anti-clockwise laying non sticky silk then sticky silk and this is what traps the spider, also scientists have proven that if you put food for a spider in one section the spider will move the web from a spiral to a lop sided egg over to where the food source is.

depends on where the spider is. And it seems like you're talking about an orb web weaver sort of spider, space webs have no real pattern and its always different every time the spider makes a web

No. A spider will create the web travelling both clockwise and anticlockwise depending on what she is doing.
