Do chipmunks hibernate in the winter?

  • I know that squirrels don't hibernate (at least not the ones here), but I don't see much of the chipmunks that live beneath my porch stoop in the winter.

In its northern range the chipmunk goes underground about the end of October but sleeps deeply only during the coldest period. I'd have to say that depends on where you live, neither the squirrels or chipmunks hibernate here in the winter, I see both which is why my grandmother makes sure they have plenty to eat around her house. :)

not really, they sleep some more and loose weight (eat away their fat reserves).
