How long does a turtle live? And How long does a fly live? There are rumors that a turtle that died recently was around 200 years old and that there was a picture of it taken in the 1940s, but there were cameras well before that, why are there no pictures of it before 1940s? What actual proof do we have that turtles live to around 200? I cannot find any real scientific EVIDENCE. Where are the actual PAPERS on the turtles that have been PUBLISHED and extablish EVIDENCE for how long they live? I don't think it is a conspiracy, or anything, but I would like to see the PROOF so that I can know EXACTLY what is rumor and what is truth. Thank you, Note Somebody wrote: If you aren't convinced of the claims, then it's your job to do the counterview research, not ours. [WRONG: this site is for people who KNOW something to contribute--not criticize someone who wants to KNOW the truth vs the rumor!]They [WHO? Wikipedia?! Give me a break!] have put the information out there as true, so...[?

Caretta caretta, the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, is said to have a life expectancy of 80-100 years. An exceptional specimen might live to be 200 years old in a protected environment. The fact is that it is difficult to document the life expectancy of any species that outlived human investigators. There is a legend of a Loggerhead that lived more than 200 years in captivity--I believe it was at the zoological conservatory of the British Museum. I imagine that institution's web site would be able to lead you to some information. Another source would be the _Journal of Herpitology_. You should be able to find that in any good university library. In the meantime, most professional herpitologists will not stick their necks out. They learned that strategy from studying turtles. So they will say something like "life expectancy 50 years or longer." But the famous photograph from the 1940s of the craggy-faced sea turtle that was claimed to be 200 years old is compelling, and well known. And it could be true. Encyclopaedia Britannica is another good source. At the other end, Drosophilus, the common house fly, lives about 14 days in a safe environment without Jeff Goldblum.

It's true that many years ago many people didn't have camera's like we do today so it wouldn't be unusual for their to not be photo's. Also, many folks who keep turtles or tortoises for years aren't out for pubicity so they aren't going to advertise the age of their pet. Many animals have a metabolism slower than humans and many of those live vary long lives. Animals with higher metabolisms tend to have shorter life spans. Look at rats or mice. They have very high metabolisms and only live 2-3 years. Turtles and tortoises have slow metabolisms compared to humans.

I heard that a common house fly lived about 14 days. As for a turtle i thought the oldest one was like.. 140? Oh yeah and cameras.. they were fairly new and probably cost too much for the average person. Plus they weren't available to everyone like today.
