How many eyes does a butterfly have?

  • Answer:

Depends on how you define 'eye'. Most butterflies have two large compound eyes, made up of numerous individual ommatidia. The number of ommatidia vary from species to species, with more ommatidia corresponding to higher resolution of images (kind of like the number of pixels displayed on a computer screen). In addition, most have three simple eyes, called ocelli arranged in a triangular pattern between the compound eyes, or on the 'forehead'. These simple ocelli are very good at detecting light and dark, and polarization of light, and are used by flying insects in navigation and attitude control - acting much like an artificial horizon and gyroscope in a plane. So, by most standards, butterflies have five eyes. If you were to include each ommatidia of the compound eyes, it could easily be measured in the hundreds, if not thousands.

It has 2 compound eyes -- comprised of thousands of tiny lenses help the butterfly see in all directions, and recognize color and pattern and movement.

Well they have 2 functional eyes, which are compound eyes (like flies have) and sometimes they have false eyes on their wings too.

Butterflies have two compound eyes, which are like bundles of eyes. Spiders however can have eight individual eyes.
