PLEASE HELP...I want to work with animals?

  • Hi guys, i asked a similar question a few months ago but the answers i got wernt all that helpful so im wondering if anymore people out there could help!?! i am currently working as a staff nurse and although its ok its not what i really want to do for the rest of my life and the more i think about it the more depressed i get! i really would like to study and work with animals, maybe become a zoologist, biologist or even an environmental researcher. my ideal job would be to work outside with animals studying them and knowing everything about them or that one particular group of animals ive chosen to work in! the thing is i have no idea where to go from here, ive studied the wrong A levels- design, media and history and now i dont know what courses to take, if i need a degree or diploma in what i want to do, whether i can go to uni with the A levels i have or do i need to go back and do biology? im truely stuck! as well as this i am hoping to study whilst i work as i have a house and mortgage, bills etc that need paying!! please please help because this is what i really want to do with my career. many thanks

  • Answer:

I'm from the US and have never understood how the British college, A level, university thing works lol so I can't help in that sense.... but I've interned at a zoo before and would also like a career working with or researching animals/the environment. This is a really great site, the link I'm giving you will send you to the Animal Behavior page, but if you click on "Bioscience Careers" near the top, it'll give you a rather large list of bio science careers, some of which work with animals or do some kind of research. I think the website is written for Americans, but most of the information should translate well for Europe or at least give you an idea of what to look for. http://www.aboutbioscience.org/animal_behaviorist.html My other advise is to contact someone on the zoology faculty at a university near you and ask them questions about your A levels and what you need to do in order to go to university for animal related science. Most university faculty would love to answer questions to prospective students (although they're pretty busy so it may take a while, but be persistent and someone will answer you!). The zoology program page of any university will have a contact page with all the faculty and what they are researching/what their degree is in, so you can choose who you want to contact. Good luck! If you edit and ask more questinos I'll try to help!
