What jobs can you get with an A.A.S. in General Technology?

What kind of job (and pay) can you get with an AAS in Veterinary Technology from a community college?

  • I'm trying to decide on a major and would love to get into veterinary medicine. Unfortunately, this is the only degree that they have. What type of job and pay could I expect to get with such a degree?

  • Answer:

By Veterinary Technology, you mean Veterinary Technician? Veterinary technicians saw mean annual earnings of $28,920 in 2007, according to a report by the BLS. Hourly wages were $13.90. While the vast majority of veterinary technicians worked in veterinary offices, those working in the federal government earned the highest salaries, at $43,380. Veterinary technicians working for pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing earned $42,240. If you want to become a veterinarian, here is a website with a chart of salaries (very helpful): http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Veterinarian/Salary/by_Employer_Type And here is another useful website, I think it is the most helpful: http://careers.stateuniversity.com/pages/77/Veterinarian.html If you want to increase your salary, you should consider a graduate education in a university, that is, if finance is not an issue. And if it is, or you just prefer to finish off with an undergrad education, that's still great. Only a small difference, plus, not many people go into veterinary medicine, so they'd be glad to take you anywhere. Good luck!
