Is a Phd in Zoology realistic?

  • I have wanted to be a scientist my whole life, have spent all my years finding reptiles, fish, insects, learning every last thing about them. Im already using scientific names first, my parents and friends dont know what im talking about half of the time, and the other half im out in the wild for days just in another world with my animals of interest. i make videos, logs and pictures, all for fun and pleasure steve irwin and such shows i grew up with and i could never look back I consider myself fully able to pursue this to phd, and have actually already started. I do understand what all this means and how amazingly hard it will be. My question is..is it worth it. with my Phd i wouldnt want to settle for anything less than independent research, traveling the world, writing a book. Basically for my own satisfction, not caring about the money (still knowing that i will need it) ironically its Einsteins quote "Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it." that is giving me second thoughts This is my number one lifetime goal but i have hit a roadblock. my parents say they support it but i feel they are laughing behind my back hoping im kidding. I have become immersed in real-estate, pawning, and flipping cars. it been a family thing for generations, I have a hefty head start, and i am to inherit dozens of properties. i have been making up to 8,000 at closings and feel like trump after a sale. I am moving toward wanting a BBA or other business degrees now just to stay on top of things. im so confused bc i feel id love going to school for science and would live and breathe school. and that i would drop out if it was something i wasnt interested in, like business. My heart wants science, but my science obsessed brain sees the fact that I have a golden opportunity to live a secure comfortable life and support myself and a family by possibly making millions selling luxury homes in phoenix, and collecting income from properties already paid off + buyin many more myself If i get a phd in Zoology which i have the determination for, will i have true opportunities to be a respected scientist or will i end up scooping elephant **** at a zoo?

  • Answer:

Clearly, you should do the family biz (sound mob-y) and use those proceeds to fund your passion. You can choose to pursue a (slow) degree over time or just approach it from a patronage sort of angle and maybe fund your own documentary or charity or whatnot.

Don't forget, the study of zoology will offer the chance to work. not just with vertebrates, but with insects and other invertebrates. Many of these creatures are pests of crops or are carriers of disease so there are obviously many career opportunities in this field. Like many I began with an interest in mammals and reptiles but once I began to look at insects, I was hooked!

Well, I don't want to be pedantic, but it's wrong to say "heart wants...". On a more serious note, obviously you should do what you want to/enjoy. Given that you are in a position of financial stability, you will find it much easier to be a scientist than many other people. Most academics doing zoology/biology research have PhDs in zoology/biology - it's a great (and possibly the best) start to a career in zoology research. However, it is important to note that science research does not involve all that much travelling, or actual field work any more - if that's why you think you'd enjoy it, you'll be in for a nasty shock.
