Spiny Tailed Lizard - What and how often should they eat.?
-
Where from: I live in the mountains of southern Mexico. Guadalajaro Jalisco to be exact. I believe it is native because I see them on the hill to school and they skitter off their sunning place as I near. My cleaning lady found one camped out in a cleaning bucket 3 days ago and I took it in. Description Color: Thin round spiny tail about 2/3 its lenght. It was first labeled a collared lizard because it has a dark ring that comes over his shoulders from underneath and almost makes a collar but doesn't. It is streamlined not like Uromastyx. On its belly it colored lenghtwise white in the center 1/2 then goes dark blue and fades out as tourquoise. But its top is unremarkable besides the top half collar. Its head looks like Clark spiny lizard (Sceloporus clarkii). Its tail is 11 cm measuring to the leg attachments. (Don't know how to do these measures.) Not much color on back. A four or siz lighter scales mixed in between the should blades. Other thant that greenish to brown. Tail getting lighter. Desscription Measured: From initiation of back legs to shoulder is about 4cm with a widest part of 1.2 to 2.5cms depending on standing on 4s or laying flat on a rock. From snout to neck is about 2 to 2.5cm The widest part of head are ear tufts 1.5 cm tuft to tuft. So a total of 16.5 cm snout to tail tip. Help me set up a terrarium and feed this lost soul correctly. Or tell me to send him back to the wild. I have a degree in Zoology but never studied herpatology.

Answer:
Uromastyx are omnivorous lizards though a majority of their diet consists of vegetables and dark leafy greens with the occasional insects. Vegetables such as carrots, beans, peas, corn, and many varieties of dark greens a and dandelion greens should be offered. Some bird seed can also be added to the vegetable mix as well. Some people have even added commercially available finch pellets to supplement the diet. Crickets, mealworms, super worms or wax worms should be offered occasionally. Because this is a desert dweller, water does not need to be offered as they will get all of their moisture they need from their diet.
