What does speed dating refer to?

Speed dating is basically matchmaking. It is a prearranged situation where you go to a restaurant or bar and they have x number of men and women there and you talk to a prospect date for 3-5 minutes, then the bell rings and you move to the next table, next person, talk to them for 3-5 minutes, this goes on until everyone has had a chance to meet. You take notes as you go and at the end, you decide who you felt you were compatible enough with to try a date. You both have to agree on each other. You might not find anyone, you might find one or two. Sometimes you might get lucky and find 7-10 matches..just depends on how many people attend and what the choices are. Does this help? It's more for professional people that don't have time nor desire to do the bar scene, internet, personals, etc., to try and meet a compatible partner.

Its a process whereby you can have a short date... usually about 5 minutes with a number of members of the opposite sex in one night and see which ones you hit it off with. Sometimes held in restaurants with 20 guys and 20 gals and you rotate tables so that you get 5 minutes with everyone over the hour (times may vary). At the end of it all, you tell the co-ordinator which ones you liked and then if they liked you too, you get each others numbers.

I laughed at alot of the responses to this question: Speed dating is when you are in a room full of people same amount of men as women and they sit at a table as couples and they have a given time to ask as many questions as they can, and then when time is up either all the girls move or all the guys move but they move to another table and its on again. At the end of the evening you have met lots of potentials for future dates. That my friend is speed dating.

During that time, if a spark is struck, they can exchange numbers, or just say "Nice to meetcha", and move on. Relatively simple idea, and works well in some places, and has been a flop in others.
