Has anyone been to Kenya or Tanzania?

Tanzania, Zanzibar or Kenya?

  • I have a month off in December and early January. I've been thinking of going to Zanzibar and Tanzania - I'm keen for some culture, some beautiful beaches, lots of relaxing, preferably with other young backpacker types. And I'd be interested in seeing some of the African continent - animals and the plains - and potentially climbing Kilimanjaro. A friend suggested I might get bored spending that long in just Tanzania and Zanzibar, and thinks I should add Kenya to the itinerary. Has anyone done anything similar, and what would you recommend? What should I do? Where's the best beach in the area for relaxing and meeting young travellers? And can anyone recommend cheap accommodation near the beach? Thanks all, Scott

  • Answer:

There is so much to do in Tanzania (including Zanzibar) that a month might be too short, especially if you want to also see animals and climb Kilimanjaro. I would try and just do the one country and really absorb it all. cf

Zanzibar - We learned all about it 2 years ago in school. Funny enough, Tanzania and Kenya too! They are all beautiful but Zanzibar has beaches, nice food, places to go, and kind people. the other too are way to hot, and Zanzibar is known for it's mild climate. Not too hot, and not too cold. I love it. And you must try the traditional dish, Pilau. Don't worry as they speak English and have very low crime rates there. Plus you get a 'real feel' of African Culture. And there are many good hotels there. If you need more information, check out these sites: http://www.zanzibar.net/ - Here you can learn more about this island paradise, and plan an unforgettable holiday online too! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanzibar - The encyclopedia's views on Zanzibar and some useful info too! http://www.africasky.co.uk/Zanzibar-holidays.htm - Beautiful, beautiful Africa... Plus I also recommend Jordan. It is the second Dubai. Don't worry no fighting there! Good Luck and enjoy your holiday! ;)

Zanzibar is small so after a while, you might be bored! Tanzania is a fantastic place with loads to see, 1 months will not be enough if you go (safely) off the tourist traps. Kenya is great BUT if you add Kenya to your visit, I would start with it. It is so touristy that if you do it after Zanzibar and Tanzania, you will probably be disappointed. Unless you plan to climb Kilimandjaro or Mount Kenya, keep it to the end of your trip! And ENJOY!
