South Africa is far and away the most developed country, but we are still classified as a developing nation by European & North American standards. Our economy is the most diversified. Most African states rely on agricluture/farming and mining or a mixture of both. South Africa, while exporting both agricultural goods and being a major player in coal, gold & platinum, has a thriving industrial sector. BMW, VW & Toyota have modern plants here and we build and export vehicles to countries in South-East Asia & Australasia. We are constantly upgrading and getting the lasest technology, but we are a mix of 1st and 3rd World country. Very advanced in certain areas, but still behind in others. Mainly is social standards are we considered 3rd World, but our economic & industrial levels are pretty high. For one, we were only a handfull of countries worldwide, including the US & Europe, that maintained it's credit investment level during the worldwide economic downturn. In other words, even though the global economy was not good, South Africa was still considered a safe place to invest, where as a country like Portugal, Greece and the US, were not. This shows that our economy is robust enough and developed enough to withstand a major economic crisis. I'd say Egypt, Botswana & Namibia are close behind. Angola, Tunisia & Ghana are improving rapidly too. Zimbabwe was South Africa's equal, but Robert Mugabe has effectively destroyed that country. It's mainly Southern Africa & North Africa (Arab nations), that approach the levels of European standards, but they are still some way off. Central, Eastern & Western Africa are still facing many social and political difficulties and along with chronic civil wars, their pace of development is severely hampered.
