  • Answer:

Wed. Dec 26, 2007 OUT OF AFRICA: The American Jewish Distribution Committee is planning to shutter its famed clinic in Addis Ababa, leaving in limbo the fate of several thousand Falash Mura still living and praying in the Ethiopian capital A medical clinic in Ethiopia that emerged as an icon of the Jewish rescue effort in the country will close its doors next month, leading relief organizations to wonder about the future of those who remain in the country. The clinic, which was set up in 1990, emerged as the de facto capital of the Jewish encampment in Addis Ababa, where thousands of Ethiopians have lived while waiting for immigration papers to Israel. Just last month, the doctor in charge, Rick Hodes, was declared a “hero” on CNN. But now — even though there are thousands of people still living around the encampment — the organization that runs the clinic, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, is shutting the clinic down.

Ethiopian Jews usually live in the Amhara region of Ethiopia near Gondar. (I'm pretty sure that's right) The majority (more than 70%) of them have immigrated to Israel in the 80's and 90's. Israel had two resuce operations (Operation Moses and Solomom) to bring the Jews to Israel when Ethiopia was in war. Also, many Jews fled to Israel by foot to avoid persecution by Mengistu Haile Mariam (dictator). Just an FYI, Ethiopian Jews are known locally as Beta Israel and/or Falashas, but Falasha is more of an offensive tem that was used against them. (These terms should definelty help your search; Wikipedia also has an article) Hope this helped!
