Volunteering in Africa-how to do it?
-
Hi everyone. I am currently looking at volunteering in Africa, for a maximum of 4 weeks at the end of my academic studies in Year 13, before i go to university. I have applied through my school to go on a charity volunteer programme to South Africa but unfortunately was rejected. I am now more determined then ever to volunteer some of my time, for free in Africa to help those that are in need. I have been searching for such volunteer programmes and have found some websites that offer them BUT i am extremely suspicious of them because i have never heard of them before so i am apprehensive at paying for the programme in case its fraudulent. Does anybody, especially if you have volunteered in Africa before, know of any organizations that need volunteers for a short amount of time? Thanks.

Answer:
I have listed some legitimate NGOs in South Africa that may well be looking for volunteers. I am not sure the time-frame that they would find preferable, but I am sure if you contact them they will get back to you, most are crying out for help. Also, don't trust any organisation that requires you to pay for giving your own time. They are scams, set up either by wealthy and unscrupulous South Africans or Americans and provide a "Contiki Tour" type volunteer experience. Listed below are links to the websites of legitimate NGOs in South Africa, all of which focus on arenas that are, at present, pressing issues in the country: http://www.score.org.za http://www.wwf.org.za http://www.wildlands.co.za/home.aspx http://www.sacares.co.za http://www.haven.org.za/ http://www.bobbibear.org.za/ http://www.stmartinshome.org.za/site/default.asp http://www.ewt.org.za/ http://www.nelsonmandela.org/index.php Okay, it seems I have included too many links, so I have put two in the reference box. ______________________________________… Also have a look at this link, which may assist you: http://www.ngopulse.org/ ______________________________________… Hope this helps, best of luck.

Hate to say it pal, but gotta be frank: you have no experience. Amazing..but,yes it does take experience to volunteer. Prepare yourself well, be comfortable with your skills, and show others that you are human. That is all you have to do.
