What will be the budgetary cost of living at Lagos, Nigeria?

Whats the cost of living in Ibadan, lagos, or benin Nigeria, Africa?

  • If I wanted to visit over there for like three years how much money would I need to rent a house and pay for lights, food etc. I would like for my two boys ages 4 and 2, my husband, and myself to live over there for like three years. How much money will we need to live like a native, but in a regular house?

  • Answer:

I'm surprised that you plan such an endeavour without first visiting the place Is "studying their culture" somehow related to a romantic notion of "returning to your roots"? None of the cities you mention are particularly charming. Note that they are all in the Christan Yoruba part of Nigeria, so you'll only see one part of Nigerian culture. Cost of living? Trust me, you don't want to live like a "native" coz most "natives" live on less that USD 2 per day. You need to rent a reasonable place. Expect at least USD 1,500 per month - two years rent payable in advance; no refund. Downtown Lagos much more expensive than that. You need a car. Buy second hand only from a person you trust a lot or through expat or embassy contacts. You'll need a driver, a maid. a nanny. If you live in a house, then also 2x2 guards and maybe a gardener. Each person earns roughly USD 150 per month with live-in maid and nanny receiving less. Food is cheap (USD 500 per adult per month) if you let your maid do the shopping in the local market, but expensive if you insist on eating imported stuff. Utilities are cheap, but you'll pay irrespective of whether you actually receive the service. So, you'll need to buy diesel for your generator coz of the frequent brown-outs.
