How is the environment in Nigeria for an expat? I got an offer to work at Lagos, NAJR. Is it safe to go there?

Heard that people get robbed on roads, you canot move on roads freely, you are not supposed to move after 6.30 PM even in cars? Is it true? I got an opportunity to work in Lagos, Nageria. Is it a safe place to go and work for an Italian co?

Answer:
I currently work & live in Lagos and it's not as bad as you might think. I've been here 6 years counting and so far no serious encounters with bodily harm (touch wood) There are just two main things you will need to get use to. 1. Daily and constant interruptions in electricity supply. (here they call it NEPA) 2. Traffic is BAD due to poor road, too many motorcycles and old vehicles and absolutely no traffic rules. In Nigeria, Lagos is probably the safest compared to the eastern region with oil conflicts and the northern regions with religious conflicts. As with any other developing countries it has it's share of problems with corruptions, fraud and crime but it's really far safer than South Africa. The good news are The weather is mild and there is literally no natural diseaster of any kind. No volcanoes, earth quakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, sunami etc. Pretty much everything is negotiable, freedom takes on a different meaning here. Although you wouldn't want to push it by running around on some dark roads (which is 90% of all roads) by yourself late at night. BTW, you wouldn't have to worry about genetically engineered food or mad cow here. Some fruits like pawpaw, banana, pineapple, mango, grapefruit and onions are THE BEST in the world and I've been around, really. So judge for yourself !

Its not difficult to work in Nigeria. I had been there with my brother, who used to work there. Its true that the robbery takes place very easily, only thing is you have to be a little careful about your things. Otherwise working there is peaceful, if the opportunity is good and you are confident to take up the job.

It all depends on what you can handle. If you can get used to climate, loads of people and air pollution, very busy roads you can live almost anywhere.People may get robbed but it depends on whom you are with.I would say that you have to be careful on your own as a foreigner&after dark indeed some places may be very unsafe.I walked alone in several places in Lagos and much depends on how you act.It takes lots of getting used to and take all the advice from your collegues.

Minijumbo's answer is a very, very good picture of Nigeria, and Lagos in particular. There are large groups of foreigners working for major multinational subsidiaries. Like any major city, really erratic things can happen but if you're fine with the rigors of a major cosmopolis, then you should be fine in Lagos. Most expats live on the "Island" which is a very nice part of the city. Poor traffic controls, and infrequent power supply will probably affect you the most. A generator will help a lot for the power supply [it's a regular feature of most homes, and gas is not too expensive]. If you like to drive "freely", the traffic system might not be a problem for you - provided it isn't rush hour. You'll enjoy the diversity for sure, and you'll be extremely surprised how far a little money can go - the cost of living is very, very affordable. With half of the average U.S. salary, you can live like a prince. Cheers.

Minijumbofly, Plancks, and Phemmy's answers are all pretty on the money. One exception is the cost of living, decent accommodation in Lagos is much higher than in the US, as are imported goods. Food and other things which can be bought locally are cheaper. I lived there for 3 1/2 years, and was unfortunate enough to be robbed twice at gunpoint - but that can happen in the US as well. All in all I had a great stay there and would return again for the proper job, as long as I'm single. It's not for the faint of heart though.

firstly Lagos is a beautiful place to be not because i am a Nigerian i have live my whole life here, i was born, butter and bread here (lol). yes Lagos may have some set back because of the over-pupolution, lack of road maintenace culture, traffic conjestion etc but it has her own fun and places to be. dont let anyone scared you Lagos, you cn still work up till 10 pm in some part of lagos without being arase. tell the truth where else in this world that is so save, that thieft, rape, and other things are not being done. if you company paid good money for you, i tell, you will ennjoy lagos till you dont want to leave again, and stationlize to Lagosian (lol) well i wish you best of luck and you come to fellowship with us in NIgeria particularly Lagos state (the centre of excellent)
