Is there any way to get flash support?

Is there any way to get a passport when you owe over $5000.00 in child support, in California?

  • The thing is my oldest son was difficult and ended up in Group Home for a couple years, until he was 18. The county decided that I own them many, many thousands of dollars, to be paid to the county. I can not possibly pay that and the amount keeps growing every month. Interest! I have given up on any kind of credit and just use my husbands name. Married for 7 years and have a 2 year old with my husband. The thing is that he is from another country, Jordan. He wants to take our son to Jordan to visit his family. I will not even consider getting my son a pass port unless I have one and can go with my husband and son. (Too many movies I guess) I do not want to apply and then be turned down because of the child support that will pop up. Is there any way around this? I mean I have seen services advertised for emergency 48 hour pass ports. Yah. it is expensive about $500.00 or more. Would they check the child support data base when issuing a emergency pass port? I know you have to have a confirmed airline ticket. Also, what if I applied for the pass port in another state. Like Georgia where my brother lives? I just really need to know if there is a way around this.

  • Answer:

The answer is maybe. The County or State in question would have to make the effort to notify the State Department that you are in arrears for child support. http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppi/family/family_863.html It doesn't matter what state you are in when you apply, or if you pay the money for an expedited passport: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html Are you certain what you owe is "child support" or is it actually more like medical bills? It sounds like you need to get some legal advice before applying. Spend the money on a lawyer instead, if you can't find pro bono (free) legal advice. Check with a domestic violence shelter where you live for a referral to a source of pro bono legal advice. Good luck!
