Volunteering in africa? HELP PLEASE?
-
Hi thanks to everyone who answers my question!! Right so me and friend want to go to africa and do some volunterring work. Can we do this privatley? We dont really want to stay in a hostel with lots of other volunteers. We would like to teach whatever we can, sports? english maths? and meet the local people and help them with day to day things. Obviously we want to go to a part of africa that really needs our help, maybe a little more than other places with lots of volunteers? Can anyone tell me about volunteering privately and what has to be done in order to start. we are looking to go for a month, if we enjoy it and have the money again then im sure we will go back. We really dont want to go with a big organised group like everyone else. Any info would be great and thanks again for reading and answering. Any websites with info would be great aswell.

I did what you want to do before in 2002. It put me in the home of a guy in the Volta Region of Ghana. A man whom once lived in Chicago, IL, for about 23 or 26 yrs straight. He has been back in Ghana now for at least 15 yrs and he loves Americans. I stayed with him for about 3 months out of my 11 month stay that time. He was my initial residence location. I only left his home because he made the mistake of finding me a WOMAN! She and I are still a hot item. The gentleman is an Anlo Ewe tribally and basically the Ewes are in power politically now in Ghana. So such is a good mix. You can barter with him on rates for his services and he can take you to places like Togo, West Africa and Benin, West Africa, also. As he has relatives in such spots. He will save you money in ways such as telling you to buy your visa at the countries embassies inside of Ghana. Such will save you money. He has friends all over, so you seldom will need a hotel stay where he takes you. He and I are like brothers, tribesmen, so he will not offend anyone connected to me or sent to him in Ghana, via my request. There are all kinds of projects that need outside help in Africa. So go the first time to see what holds your interest. Then dig in the second visit or setup an organization online, following legal procedures. Ghana too has refugee camps, I've been in one for Liberians periodically. So he can take you to visit any you wish. My friend in Ghana believes in social networking. He knows that if you are treated well, word of mouth will bring him more visitors and he has the time for you daily. As he is in his early 60s and gets around easily. He has an email address and cellphone.

I spent three months in Tanzania teaching and it was absolutely the best thing I have done! I was with 10-50 other volunteers, which was needed really, as a support system. Remember, you can be vunerable if you do not have a support system in place out there. We lived in a village, some people taught, some built houses, some give AIDS/HIV advice. I went with 'ART in Tanzania' Our house was quite large, but they have other projects in other parts of Tanzania and Zanzibar which are smaller. If you do not have TEFL it will be hard to do this privately I think, and I would avoid small, uncertified organisations, as they may not look after you should you need them. Whatever you do, good luck and enjoy!

Most governments have strict visa policies for volunteer. They would probably not allow you to do that type of work without the proer visa and working for a licensed organization. You meed the help of an organization . You cannot just walk into a strange country and start "helping' people. Often, they do not rust you oar do not want your "help.' you could run into all kinds of problems. You need to go with an organization. Do you have any experience doing volunteer work in your own community? You need that experience...you can learn a lot from it. and, charity really does begin at home. if you want to help people half a world away, start by helping people in your own community. there are many volunteer opportunities.
