Is tourettes syndrome genetic?

After watching a programme about Tourettes Syndrome....?

  • I was watching this program about the lives of two 15 year old girls with Tourettes Syndrome, they were in a restaurant an shouting out '*****' 'cun*flaps' 'motherfu**er' and afterwards laughing about it. Anyway, I was wondering, how can you tell when someone with Tourettes Syndrome is playing it on a faking it a bit? It seemed odd to constantly have someone shouting every 5 seconds or so for 2 hours. Maybe every couple of minutes but 5 seconds...

  • Answer:

Real: looks ashamed, embarrassed, will often leave the area if in a restaurant or other social venue. Fake: laughing afterwards

It was probably a fake program... Only about 10% of people with tourettes curse and yell inappropriate things and it's called coprolalia. I am one of those people with coprolalia. When I have to urge to curse or say body parts, it is a very stressful thing. I don't like to curse and I really don't like it when my body is making me curse. When I absolutely have to curse, I go to a quiet place where no one is around to curse. If they really had coprolalia, they wouldn't be laughing like that. Also, if someone has tourettes, they will have some kind of tic about every 5 seconds.. I know I do.. sometimes I don't get a break in between 10 tics.. The way to tell if someone is faking.. For the coprolalia, their facial expression.. If they are laughing chances are, it's fake. For motor tics.. It's hard to say. Sometimes, it doesn't bother me and I don't have an expression. Others, they say they like to laugh it off and others may have a frustrated expression.. If you knew the ins and outs of tourettes, you could probably spot a fake but I don't know..
