In UK, how many people are deeply monarchists, how many Republicans and how many are not interested?
-
First of all, sorry for my poor English (I'm Italian). In Italy, we had the impression that the popularity of the monarchy in the UK since 1992 till the wedding of Charles and Camilla felt dramatically. In recent years, it seemed that, maybe because of William, the popularity has not raised but at least not felt anymore. In your opinion, how many British are now: - strongly monarchists - strongly republicans - basically indifferent or, at most, monarchists for "inertia" ? And are there differences related to the origin and / or social or economic class?

Answer:
According to BBC Any Questions yesterday it was stated by participants supported by Jonathan Dimbleby that opinion polls before the wedding of William and Kate revealed 80% of UK population are in favour of the monarchy continuing while just 20% favour Britain becoming a Republic. I am not sure exactly when and where that poll was conducted but nobody on the programme disputed those figure, which I feel sure they would have if the figures were not correct. Since the Royal wedding it seems the proportion favouring a Republic has dropped further. I think the opinions are due to fact that a Republic would mean a politician becoming Head of State in place of the Queen as in the USA where George Bush and then Barrack Obama were both Head of State and Head of government. Because while most Brits continue to admire and respect the Queen even if they are very much less supportive of Prince Charles becoming King, the opinion of Brits about such politicians as Tony Blair or Margaret Thatcher or David Cameron being President are very much lower. The low opinion of Brits of British politicians has been intensified by the parliament expense scandal exposed by the Daily Telegraph, with outrageous fiddling and huge expense claims made by the likes of Cameron "within the rules"being highlighted equally among a high number of both Conservative and Labour MPs. That could be why people in the UK are so much more trusting of the Queen and Royalty than of politicians, because nobody trusts politicians, whatever Party they are part of. Whereas the Queen is so dignified and honourable and so conspicuously above the petty minded inter-party squabbling and hooliganism we see each Wednesday during PM's Question Time. The reaction of most Brits when they watch the rabble in the Commons such as exchanges between Cameron and Ed Milliband and the associated animal noises from the rest of them on both sides is "God save our gracious Queen, long live our noble Queen....".

There has always been a movement for a republic here in UK. It's strength waxes and wanes. The latest figures show that about 80% of the people support the Monarchy and that about 20% are in support of the various republican movements. The number of 'monarchists' is actually quite small and always has been. However, just because a lot of us are not 'monarchists or royalists' does not mean that we want to be rid of the monarchy. No. Indeed the alternative, a republic headed by such as President Tony Blair, fills many of us with horror. The thing often missed about monarchy is that as Head of State, the Queen never has to tell us the bad news. Indeed, her role is quite the opposite. We've just seen the wedding and it has boosted public morale way beyond anything that any elected government could possibly hope to achieve. No, in spite of my ancestors and their Leveller thinking, I'll stick with the Constitutional Monarchy idea. My partner and me will be in Venice in June for a holiday. Looking forward to that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHqP5FFoyf0

I have always believed in a peaceful transition from monarchy to republic. I feel that to be honest Prince Charles has not helped to promote the monarchist cause. But saying that I have to admit that Queen Elizabeth works hard and has been faultless over 60 years.

Very very few republicans . A lot of royalists . Most people aren't really royalist but don't want a republic .
