Should the energy companies help to redress the socio-economic imbalance by introducing graduated tariffs...?
-
....based on income? This would mean that pensioners and other vulnerable people would pay less and could afford to heat their homes properly, thus avoiding hypothermia and high-earners would pay a lot more which might help curb their profligate use of energy and reduce their carbon footprint! This would also mean that the energy cartel could continue price-fixing and profiteering without appearing to be so much of a 'bad boy'.

Answer:
Alan knows. Thatcher sold us out big time when she privatised the energy companies. Energy is not a commodity or something we can do without, it's essential for many people to simply stay alive over winter and absurd that we can be blackmailed by big private companies for something which we need to survive. Same goes for water. It's almost as bad an idea as privatising the NHS which nobody in the UK would advocate, so why do we accept the privatisation of energy and water? There is no competition in the energy market, the market is impregnable to new companies and the existing ones collude with each other and price fix so the consumers get completely f*****.

I think that all utility companies should be owned by the State and forced to charge a reasonable rate that everyone can afford to pay. Prices for domestic fuel should be a standard fixed rate, whilst fuel for vehicles could be flexible in order to charge more for gas guzzling motors. Privatising the utility companies under Thatcher was the worst mistake she ever made. We are all suffering as a result, even those of us who are in good, well paid, full time jobs.

A good sensible question. However the first thing that comes to mind, is the fact that our Utilities are in the hands of foreign consortium's and their only interest is to make as much profit as is possible. There is at present no representative for the customers to fight that corner.. Further more, they are offering the consumer energy based on over 400 tariffs. It was interesting to see on a BBC program, the winner of Brain of Britain who was asked whether he understood these tariffs. The answer was NO. So to your point about helping the pensioners and the vulnerable in our society, not an easy task, but I am sure with the technology available certain consideration and a workable tariff could be obtained. There is absolutely no reason for the confusion on energy charging, but then again, do you really think they really care?

So you think people on benefits who don't work for their money should be allowed cheaper fuel and pensioners who already get a winter fuel allowance should also have cheaper fuel, stop talking rubbish, you are just another one who is jealous of people who have got of their backside and made a good life for themselves, if you want to join them then work for it like they have done.

No, the whole tariff system should be simplified so the public can easily compare prices between companies. Consumers should pay the same irrespective of their income, everyone should pay for what they use. If companies start charging dependant upon ability to pay where does that end? Should a well off person pay more for potatoes than a pensioner?
