Is that hard to find any job with dui?

DUI affect getting a new job?

  • I might have gotten a job on catalina island as a cashier at the general store. the lady said before she could give me a job they have to do a criminal background check and i just said ok no problem. i have a dui is that going to affect me getting that job? and is me not saying anything in the first place going to affect me not getting a job? is she going to wonder why i didnt say anything on the phone? i figured i have nothing to hide so when they find out they find out. but should i have said something?

Melissa, first of all I would say you did the right thing by giving the go ahead signal to your new employees about your criminal background check. You are not ashamed of your past neither you are hiding anything from them, & that would lend you a job. Lots of employees do criminal background test before giving new jobs, & you should be ready to face it. Hiding the facts could have complicated the matters, which you didn't do & that's perfectly fine. Learn more on DUI, log into: http://www.aboutdui.org/index.html

It comes down to technicalities.... It depends on whether or not a DUI is a criminal offense where you live (it is not in most places), and it also depends on the nature of the background check performed. it also of course depends on the person making the decision. Personally, if you didn't have to operate a vehicle for the job, and you had impressed me so far with your qualifications and general approach / demeanor, I could care less about your DUI. But she could feel different... To answer your questions... 1) We do not know, as I explained above 2) We do not know, as explained above 3) She might wonder why you did not mention it, even if it has no impact - she might figure if you were less than forthcoming about this, you might be less than trustworthy...and keep in mind, that is what she is REALLY trying to find out...if she can trust you. 4) Yes, you should have said something - if you have nothing to hide then don't hide it (that was a BS rationalization BTW...if you know enough and concerned enough about it to be asking here, then you know your failing to disclose it was "hiding".) My advice - call them before they call you and man up. If they are not going to give you the job because of the DUI, then it does not matter if they find out from you or the background check. However, they COULD decide to not give you the job because they feel they now cannot trust you since you "hid" this information...and again, remember that unless you work for a bank or an airline, background check are really about TRUST, not the law or strict rules. Of course, you are thinking "but what if the background check doesn't show anything?". And my response to that would be that successful people do not rely on fate and luck to determine their future, they create their own fate and luck. You might as well start practicing this habit now....

It shouldn't affect you getting the job b/c it's a traffic offense, not a criminal. Also it's only a misdemeanor, not a felony. I wouldn't have told them either. It's just really frowned upon-trust me, I know. The only time a DUI on record could hurt your job is if you're doing some sort of driving, or if it's like a federal job. Other than that, you should be ok.

If you lied about it, you lost the job. If you told her, being up front and honest, you may still have a chance. Employers will look at someone that's made a mistake and owned up to it....but not someone that hid something or lied about it.

It really depends on the employer. What is a big deal to some wouldn't matter to others.

I don't think a D.U.I. should affect a job as a cashier. Only a job that involves driving. Above all, be honest with them.

Some jobs like those involving driving or dealing with heavy machinery. Stop the discrimination against DUI's

I wouldn't worry too much. They are probably more interested in felonies, theft, fraud, hot checks, or similar charges.

you prob should have said something...
