I would not discount writing about the Indians. This is my heritage and my favorite decades of history. Treaty practices, how and when tribes were relocated and moved around, different battles, their treatment by differing presidents, etc...

The Red Badge of Courage is really good. Its about this young boy who becomes a soldier and fights in the Civil War.. Easy to read!

Does the book have to be nonfiction? I would assume yes. A Revolutionary People At War: The Continental Army and American Character, 1775-1783 Amazing book, but 463 pages. The Killer Angels is another good one. 368 pages.
