Why do speed cameras make people go faster?
-
I see it time and time again and I cannot be the only one. A driver approaches a speed camera at a sensible speed (34mph?) Then when in the cameras eye slows down to a pathetic speed (20mph?) then after the camera speeds up to a silly speed (45mph?). It's proof that these yellow tax robbers don't work! They just make the stretch of road AFTER the camera MORE dangerous. Road humps work and black boxes in cars will work. But speed cameras...what a waste of money. Good on Swindon for trying to ban them. Government don't give a flying duck about our safety, just how to make money out of us.

Answer:
Speed cams are just a way of taking money from the people. Do you still believe that speed cams help cut road deaths? It's all a lie. Speed cams are owned mainly by UK central government who take all of the money thus collected. I read of one Tory council who have just got rid of all of their speed cams. Yehaa! way to go. Likewise speed humps these do nothing more than damage people's cars, even those like me who creep over them doing 20mph. Lots of councils have found to their cost that there are some really clever lawyers out there who can screw councils for millions over time for damage to people's cars due to humps. Actually the humps cause more pollution beause when a car brakes as it approaches a hum, it shoves out even more CO2 or whatever it is - black gas thing. On north London borough has actually already dug up all of it's humps and returned the streets there to the car owners who pay the tax which maintains them. About bloody time. Motorists are already up in arms about excessive petrol tax and a lot more besides. I'm 67 and am all to aware that the car is King here in UK - it's a matter of historical and poltical fact which young folk now just starting out on their driving careers seem not to know about. We have fought long and hard for new and better roads in the past and by 1959 had the first motorway, the M1 up and running. We paid a lot of treasure for that road and others since. Yet we still have fewer motorways than our Roman ancestors enjoyed here in Britain nearly 2,000 years ago. There's a Roman road a mile from where I live. It is the most efficient road anywhere in South East London - been doing it for nearly 2,000 years. We've paid a hell of a lot for that road. So why allow greedy politicians to take more of our money for doing a mere 40mph? Look my car will do 160mph - I've had it at 140 on an M-way not far from where I live. Get a life- ram your boot down to the floor occasionally.

Speed camera's are there for a valid good reason, to make money. I don't think that they save lives in my view, that's a poor excuse by the Police in order to keep the camera's. I have never ever been booked for speeding but.....when travelling through a speed camera zone you have to take your eyes off the road ahead to view your speedometer. This is then more dangerous than travelling an extra 2 mph. and in that split second of not looking ahead, it's not saving a life, it's destroying one which could be death, all for the sake of a camera. Ditch the camera's and let's patrol the roads the old fashioned way with Police on the streets.

I tend to be watching the speed clock instead of watching the road! Also!Although I know I am within the speed limit!I always tend to put my foot on the foot brake when I approach a speed camera!Am I the only one who does this?

More then like they have not realised that they have approached a speed camera until after then tried to drive away fast. ha ha ha ha ha

It's not the Government that put the cameras in, but mostly Councils.

Right or wrong what amuses me is that where i live its very hilly and most of the cameras are on a stretch where brakes are in use anyhow as the gradient speeds you up.Still it enables the government to bail out the banks.

They certainly do have perverse side affects in the way they make people behave. It isn't safe to be constantly taking your eyes off the road to check your speed.

The evidence from experience is that cameras save lives. Simple.
