What Would it Take to Restore the Middle Class in USA?

  • First let define what I mean by "middle class" -- to be precise 35K to 200K per year for individuals, adjusted gross income. What about the poor? This question is not about the poor, it's about the middle class (see definition given above), for information about the poor please see Wikipedia. What about the rich? Ditto -- see Wikipedia. So now our topic has been narrowed down, but what does "restore" mean? OK, let's define that -- a restored middle class is the same size as the middle class in 1960. It occupies about 80% of the American people, about 5% being rich, about 15% being poor. This question is not about the rich or the poor. It's about getting the middle class to comprise about 80% of all American citizens -- that is what I'm asking about. You say "Dunno, Don't care" OK lovely, then beat it, don't file an answer, I don't need clowny answers or wise cracks. You say, well what are the possibilities? OK, here are a few out of hundreds of possible ways to restore the middle class -- you don't have to use any of these, but you can if you like: 1. Create a Trade policy based on "No Trade Deficit". That means if China sells us $1.00 worth of goods or services it MUST buy $1.00 worth of goods or services from USA. [This contradicts Globalism, and it contradicts Free Trade, and also the Theory of Comparative Value -- so many academics are screaming at me -- have I not heard of these things -- answer -- yes I have -- I'm proposing something new here -- In order to become what we are not (solvent) we must go by the way in which we are not (a new way -- let's call it Fair Trade, or Authentic Trade). 2. Tax Policy that shifts large amounts of money from the rich to the middle class. This is called progressive taxation. It reached its pinacle in USA under Eisenhower (marginal tax rates for extreme high earners reached over 90%), who was not a Marxist, and who ran the country and presided over an economy that worked quite well by all accounts (see History books, if you have a library card). 3. Education Policy at the K-12 level that puts a heavy emphasis on critical thinking skills. So heavy in fact that knowledge per se is somewhat de-emphasized compared to today -- with standardized knowledge testing, which creates little robots with no thinking skills, but who know everything about Harriet Tubman. 4. Industrial policy centered on National cash prizes for major breakthroughs in new technologies likely to greatly increase exports from USA -- the USA makes -- the world takes! It could be a solar panel improvement, or an electric car, or a battery, or a geothermal technology, or a small wind turbine, or a way to dissociate CO2 into pure carbon and useful oxygen, or 10,000 other things -- but to get the prize it has to be something likely to boost USA exports. We want to sell to the world -- that's how we get jobs in USA -- that's how we boost our middle class. I could put 6 other things -- but I already know my own thoughts -- what I want is your thoughts. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE NOT FOUND THE TIME TO READ THROUGH THIS QUESTION -- PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER IT -- YOU ARE FAR TOO BUSY -- SO GO DO SOMETHING ELSE!

  • Answer:

The middle class becomes the poor and the poor become the poverty stricken, adjustments to our economy are being set in place by liberal policies to create such a situation. In truth there will be no middle class, there will be the elite, the rich, the poor and the poverty stricken, our titles just won't change, neither will our pay scales, the difference will be in the amount of taxes the middle class are expected to pay. If you want to stimulate the economy, you must continuously strive to create new and better technology that other countries will want. In order to do this our education system must excel and we must allow our children to strive to be the best they can. Instead every effort is treated the same. A child who doesn't want to be in class and only goes through the motion to stay out of the juvenile home and disrupts and bullies those who are willing to learn should be kicked out. Miscreants are running this society because our government enforced laws that favored their needs over those who are willing to put forth the effort. Money is a concern, but what most people don't comprehend is it is not the main issue. The main issue is to return America back into a country that glorifies honesty, hard work, responsible behavior, pride in output, and strict discipline for gross behavior, and over all else human life must be valued above all else, etc.etc. You must first understand the problem before you can attempt to fix it.

isn't it amazing in a "free" society that a middle class "HAS" to be "MADE"?......seems that if the government got out of it maybe people could improve themselves and there would be a "middle class"

Manufacturing base must be restored, however, they would have to be lower paying jobs to compete with China. Until we can offset the difference in manufacturing costs overseas, which is a fraction of what it is in the states, then we loose. Some of the items you mentioned above...well those manufacturing jobs are already being exported to China. What is happening is this: Demand gets created here, then it get manufactured over seas and shipped back so we can spend our money, which then goes over seas again. US made products are to expensive for most, so the cheaper "made in China" goods are purchased. Education: I for one would like to know where all the money that is being pumped in the current system is going. We throw billions of out tax dollars into the current system with no improvement what so ever. Your right about the teaching to a test aspect. Total failure.

America has sufficient resources to give every family a house an a car, as well as the means of subsistence most countries can only dream of. What's needed isn't a restoration of the middle class, there is no need for there to be any other class. Every American needs the right to a job. Every job needs to pay a living wage. Every job needs to support an archetypical American lifestyle. The government is capable of offering all this, and more. Unfortunately (although in the long run it would be more profitable for everybody), the government would have to overcome opposition from the rich, the powerful, and (last but not least) half a nation of pitiful conservatards who believe history has come to an end where we should stop striving for progress...

Yeah. Who?

The only way to bring back jobs to America and stopping companies from manufacturing over seas is by closing Department of Energy Department of EPA Department of Agriculture Department of Education - for starters this would free up states rights and allow businesses to manufacture without being shaken down by the Federal Government ie. You said there are hundreds of ways to restore the middle class, well I'm sorry, with all your education your answer doesn't really ring much different than our current policy with a buzz. And even though you sound extremely left, to me it really doesn't matter which ideological bend you are, schemes are what the citizen has been contending with for decades. We can return to solid middle class by a fair tax system, pushing the ego driven career minded federal electorate out the door and letting our new representatives (Federal level) work on our economic and international issues and stay the heck away from social problems that could be handled by the state instead of making them a political punching bag. As far as restoring the middle class to the same condition (size) as the 60's, I'm pretty sure that simply can't happen, not to mention; I'm not to sure on those statistics unless you're asking this in the "what if" theory. Then again I could be wrong.... Nice question!
