Who owns or operates Snopes.com?

Who owns and/or operates either of these two sites? How can I be certain that the information contained on either of these sites are factual and not some sort of misrepresentation?

    Snopes is run by Barbara and David Mikkelson, a California couple who met on the alt.folklore.urban newsgroup. They are thoroughly apolitical, and refuse any ads that might be seen as having a bias.
