International Business Machines (IBM) plans to lay off about 5,000 US employees, with many of the jobs being transferred to India, a media report said today. The technology giant has been steadily building its work force in India and other locations, while reducing the number of employees based in the US. Foreign workers accounted for 71 per cent of Big Blue’s nearly 4.00,000 employees at the start of the year, up from about 65 per cent in 2006, the Wall Street Journal said. The latest round of cuts target the company’s global business-services unit, which does everything from running corporate data centers to managing HR for clients. Some jobs are being eliminated as customers have ended contracts or the company has automated tasks. But employees were quoted as saying that they have been training IBM workers from India to do work that will now be moved overseas.

I just wonder whose jobs he was talking about when he said he was going to save or create 3 mil. jobs!

You're missing the big picture. IBM may have fired 5,000 workers, but the stimulus package saved the jobs of 25 police officers, for a year. You'll feel much better if you just focus on the jobs created, and whisper to yourself "Hope", "Change", and "Yes, we can."

That's not going to look good for Obama or IBM. On the other hand, the bailout is intended to help the company, not the workers in the company. They have to save money and cut corners, and outsourcing is sadly the best way to do it.

Why, exactly, is Obama being blamed for a bailout that Bush promised? He can be held responsible (though not solely) for some of the details, but the entire corporate welfare process was stared by the last administration. Sounds like the Republicans are now balking at the elements like this that have actually remained essentially "free market" in scope. Who are the socialists here?

I hate IBM for what they are doing to American workers, but they are NOT asking for or getting any government stimulus money. IBM is not only moving jobs to India. They have also sent jobs to China and Vietnam that were once US based. This is not something new. They have been doing this for years now.
