Why did communism fail in the Soviet Union?

Why was the Soviet Union 'bad', or 'unsuccessful'? And how does that have anything to do with communism?

  • Please don't say communism is evil or something along those lines without any factual evidence. Why is a nation that was on the forefront of science and technology, was a primary factor in the destruction of radical fascism, and was militarily superior to every nation, considered bad? Was it Stalin? Is that the only reason? Khrushchev even condemned Stalin's aggression when he came into power. That's like using Hitler as a testament to German philosophy. And how was the lifestyle like in the nation? I'm sure people were scared of the government due to censorship and persecution, but what about how these citizens met ends and stuff? As for the second question in the title, the government became essentially self feeding monster of loyalists, because Stalin made the government into something it wasn't supposed to be. Communism has nothing to do with this. In fact, the Soviet Union had the second largest economy at the time of its dissolution. People argue that because the extent at which the government had to regulate the economy, things became overly complex and began to put business at a standstill, but that just means it was impractical at the time; with current technology government regulation would not be difficult at all. I would also like to preface the fact I'm not for the Soviet Union, I'm just not educated enough about it. So don't flame me.

  • Answer:

The Soviet Union wasn't bad unless you didn't know how to keep your mouth shut - the overthrow of the Czar and the ushering in of a people's government was expected because life under the Czar had turned so wasteful and negligent. What ended up happening however was the turning of the Communist party into a totalitarian dictatorship due to Stalin's takeover of the party. What people call Communism in Russia was clearly just Stalinism, his own hunger for power and security at all costs. After Stalin died, there were efforts by the party to try to ease life. But Stalin's death would instigate political turmoil in satellite countries. Under the people's government for the people, listening to divisive information from other countries was considered seditious and harmful and was never encouraged in the name of national security. Hence censorship existed. Yes the USSR was the first to launch a satellite and first to put a man in orbit. There were good things however about being a citizen under a Communist government, things which westerners will cringe over because they have not lived under it. Under Communism, you could receive the highest education, entirely free of charge. Engineering and other forms of high education were highly prized. Everyone had a job, there was no unemployment. Everyone had housing - no homelessness - and healthcare. You were a part of society and expected to contribute to society. Selfishness and greed were not allowed to play any part of the social structure. You couldn't become stinking rich. But in that society none of the essentials were ever priced out of reach of the common man so you never needed to become wealthy. This could possibly bring complaint by someone who studied to be a doctor or an engineer because they would receive only the same pay as a taxi driver. But that was the price to pay for social security and independence from the west. Its also interesting to note that the great Depression in the 1903s did not touch the Russian economy at all. In the 1930s up through to the 50s if you were suspected of participating in politics against the party, even if those suspicions were merely a wrong comment or outright protests, you could be dealt with harshly, arrested in the middle of the night and either taken away, sent to Siberian work camps or imprisoned, or just shot. Things eased a bit in the 60s and 70s but the freedoms people have in the west to whine and complain were never known in Russia under Communist rule. The USA in the 1950s, paranoid over the strength of Russia under Stalin's harsh rule, worked hard to discredit and bring down the USSR bu any means it could, including deliberate lies in order to secure success for American political ambitions. This continued for decades. In the 80s the Reagan government sought to undermine the strength of Russia by reinforcing Afghanistan's "Freedom fighters" with American weapons, thus dragging Russia into a prolonged war which eventually bankrupted the nation and helped usher in the collapse of the Communist system under Gorbachev who was altogether too friendly with American government and big business interests. The only cause American business and governments had towards maintaining freedom for individuals was so individuals could be spoon-fed "freedom" under the guise of Americanism and thus allow American business and it's corporations to grow for the purpose of gaining control over what the citizens watch, read and eat - which hasn't proven to be freedom. There were stressful points of course and these caused a lot of hardship. In the 1930s Stalin engineered a famine in Russia which left millions dead - the purpose was so Stalin could purchase western technology and thus swiftly industrialize Russia which until the 1920s was largely a remote, isolated and backwards agrarian nation, inefficient and rebellious. Political strife and speech were harshly dealt with in the 30s. Stalin organized a protected society within society in order to maintain his vision of how the government ought to be run. Some historians believe that Stalin's harsh ideas for government grew culturally from Russia's own history over the centuries, highly influenced from the viciousness of Mongolian rule 400-500 years earlier, the essence of which existed in Russian peasant culture for many years after the Mongolians ceased to be of importance in Russia.

it's true that the soviet union was not a perfect communism, so it's not a perfect example of the fallacies of communism. however, it was obvious from the condition of east berlin to the condition of west berlin how low the quality of life was for those under the control of the soviet union. also, not being educated about the soviet union is somewhat problematic when weighing the pros and cons of communism. there are tons of books on communism, socialism, capitalism, and the soviet union that will help you make your decisions regarding the matters

It has to do with God-given rights. If all men are created equal, then nobody has the right to violate God's law against murder. It's the commands of God that establish our rights, like the right to life. When you give the government authority over rights instead of God, it allows the government to murder without consequence. And they did. Lenin murdered, Stalin murdered, Kruchev murdered, Mao murdered, Pol Pot etc. Why do you think Hiliary wants national health care. So the government can decide who gets what treatment depending upon how many productive years they have ahead of them. "Thou shalt not steal" establishes the right to private property ownership. When you give the government the authority over property instead of individuals, the government, then, has control over all industry, farming, ranching etc. and people don't have security apart from a trust in the people in government. When a government mis-manages property, people are left with nothing as in the case of the failed Soviet Union. The US government has undertaken a number of social programs. The "social security" program was supposed to be a "trust fund" that assured retirement for workers. But the government has raided the trust fund until it is now 100% empty. There is nothing to pay baby-boomers who have paid into the system all their lives. The next generation of Americans is smaller. There is just no way the mis-managed system can support all the old folks retiring in the next few years. Socialism is Godless, therefore it has no moral underpinnings, therefore it always fails whenever it is tried.

The idea of Communism is not totally bad but the implementation or what it became was. The ideals of the govt supplying the basics such as housing, medical care and everyone works are fine if run properly. Unfortunately this creates a huge bureaucracy which becomes unable to react properly to problems and it became more interested in only meeting desired results rather than being efficient and doing good for the people. Many of the technological advances were not of the soviet making but rather stolen from others and redone soviet style. Too many times they made 5 year plans with overly optimistic expectations and so when problems occurred they were big. One major problem for the soviet union and associated countries was distribution. Without a decent distribution system food, materials and other goods were not available everywhere when needed, wanted etc. So on a regular basis stores suffered shortages of basics like bread, milk, meat and vegetables and this resulted in long lines at stores especially when new shipments were to arrive. Combine this with poor wages and a great lack of incentive to do well or make things happen meant a gross lack of action for improvement. Basically for the average person life was not that great as shortages of everything from food to fuel, poor electrical system, poor quality goods available and a lack of quality housing. They made do and of course this created a huge black market for everything.
