Taking a gap year after high school to travel the world- where should I go?
-
After high school I'm planning to take a gap year to travel to all of the places I've always wanted to visit. The only problem is, I don't know where I want to go anymore! I used to have it all planned out, now it seems as if my interest in many of the countries on my list has substantially subsided. One country I definitely will be going to is Russia. I'd like to spend a few months in eastern Europe, and Russia seems the most prominent prospect in my mind. Please note: I'm not looking so much for exotic but rather "fulfilling". I know that's entirely confusing, and I myself have not a clue what criteria would be involved in such an attribute, but for some reason that's the only word that comes to mind. Some thoughts would be nice. Also include why you have suggested the country in question. Thanks in advance! Side note: I am for sure going to travel from Vladivostok to Moscow via the Trans-Siberian railway. The ruggedness of the whole think is oddly attractive to me. Suggestions similar to this one would be much appreciated! I'll also be volunteering in Cambodia for six months after, so I really want this trip to be an adventure. I will probably never have such an opportunity again, whereas I volunteer for a few months every summer.

Answer:
As well as visiting Russia i suggest you visit all the other countries of Eastern Europe. Czech Republic and Slovakia are beautiful scenic places, Ukraine is full of history (think Orange revolution)and has many cities to visit, a large country with a wide range of cultural differences (Russian parts, Ukrainian parts, Crimean Tatar parts). i also suggest the former countries of Yugoslavia. Bosnia still bares the scars of war but its people and culture are intriguing and unlike what you find in the west. . Croatia has some of the best beaches you will see and its beauty is still undiscovered and unspoilt by tourist. Locals are friendly and welcoming. Romania and Poland are both now part of the EU yet have not lost all there traditions to the EU. Romania has Beautiful mountains around Transylvania and Poland like Czech Rep and Slovakia is full of historic buildings. In Russia attempt to stop of at ( Санкт-Петербург )Saint Petersburg as it is such a fulfilling city. So much to do and you can taste a real excert of Russian life through the city. It's like Russia's hidden diamond! Have fun on your trip ! :D

I would honestly suggest waiting until after you graduate college to take a gap year ... you know a little bit more about the world/history ... and all of these places will be much more enticing! plus you will have 4 more years to save up your money in order to fund your travels. Also, when you are 22 and graduated from college, many more opportunities will be exposed to you than if you are only an 18 year old high school grad. Maybe you could look into studying abroad? I have friends that have studied abroad in england, canada, australia, new zealand, russia, france, chile, germany, peru, italy, spain, ireland, china, thailand ... and lots of other places, so it's definitely a possibility to travel the world while in college. lots of colleges offer mission break trips to underdeveloped countries in africa, asia, south america, and central america. this could be a wonderful opportunity for you as well.if you still don't agree with me, than i urge you to consider some type of volunteer program such as the peace corps or another NGO. this way, you could travel the world with meaning and purpose while still getting to experience major cities and attractions. also, it is something you will be able to put on a resume to let potential employers know that you traveled around the world while volunteering and helping people ... not just traveled for leisure and wasted time and money. i wish you luck!

If you are looking for fufillment I would definately go to India, it has always seemed like a country with so many hidded treasures just waiting to be found. The same goes for turkey whick is also in the area you are looking for. But out of that region I would suggest south africa. The wild life is incredible. The landscape is spectacular. And the people are the nicest in the world. Plus, its really cheap for americans!
