  • Answer:

No, you need a passport for all cross-border travel as of June 1. You can expedite it; they are processing applications in 2-3 weeks. "Life or death emergencies," call the National Passport Information Center. 1-877-4-USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) Although some places say a plane ticket is necessary, with the new requirement for passports for land travel, I'm almost positive the Passport Center will be able to expedite it for driving. You'll probably need to provide some kind of evidence of the emergency.

If you're driving, you don't need a passport. It's only required for air or ocean travel, in Mexico & Canada. That said, you shouldn't need to produce tickets to get a passport. That's generally the type of thing that would be needed for a visa. A passport is a type of identification available for citizens of a given country. You don't ever have to leave the country, in order to get one. A visa is specific permission by another country, for you to enter. Often, the visa-issuing country will ask for a copy of your itinerary or tickets, so that they have proof that you plan to leave and go back home. The city you live in should offer passport services. If you're in a really small town, you might check with your county offices. Otherwise, you can use a service like the one in the link below. They'll walk you through all of it, and make sure it all gets done right. FYI, I wouldn't wait. It can take a couple of weeks to get a passport processed, so if you think you're gonig to need it soon, you might as well get it started.
