Is India a safe country to visit?

India is beautiful; the culture, the environment, etc. But is it a safe country to visit during this time? Where can I check this information?

Been in India for long, I don't see any issues here, except for some regions. India is pretty safe place, only do not readily trust strangers. Slumdog millionaire is a point in time that is chosen for a movie; making/watching a horror movie does not mean there are only devils in that country the movie is made!! South, western, or central is cool--weather-wise too.

Stay out of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Tripura, Manipur as there is an insurgency going on there also at present there are elections being held and lots of protests are being held in West Bengal and Orissa.
